Need help diagnosing problem w/ 1995 cr 250 PLEEEAASE!!

Ok so I bought an older bike off ebay and drove 6 hours to pick it up. I bought an older 1 so I could learn how to do some work on it. It started and ran fine w/ the exception of the kick started slipping every other kick. Anyway, the neighbor took off the carborator to "show me" all about it. He also showed me how to check the plug to see if the bike is running to lean/rich or just right. Of course it was to rich, why should it be ok. lol.. Anyway.. he moved the ring up 1 on the pin and I have had trouble getting it to stay started ever since. I put the ring back where it was and just adjusted the "screw" for the air mixture on the carberator to try to lean it out a bit. However, I still cannot get it to stay started. It will turn over and start once and then I have to clean off the spark plug and put it back and then It will start once again and then die and I have to clean the plug again before it will fire. I thought raising the ring was supposed to lean it out but it seams that I am flooding it all out.. When I picked it up the guy said he doesn't choke it to start it.. he just kicks it over 4=5 times and it is good to go. I'm not sure but there is probably a reason he didn't choke it. Either way I would like to make everything staight on the bike and I would like to do it myself. I live in albuquerque, NM and the altitude is around 4000 I believe. Anyway taking that into consideration. PLEASE HELP I have the clymers manual and am reading through it but I would love some help and advice if anyone had any. Thanks so much. ps. any help with the slipping kick starter would be cool too.
