I thought I'd write a simple guide for buying Yu-gi-oh! cards here on E-bay, as I've seen several cards that really aren't worth the cost that has been payed in my opinion, the game, hereforth known as YGO for simplicity's sake has two formats, advanced and traditional, certain cards are not legal in most game shop tournaments, now this doesn't mean ya can't use the card in fun duels and the like, but if you're wanting to get more involved, typically more stores play Advanced format. You can see the current banned list at yugioh-card website, (link not given due to E-bay policy).
Here's one of the biggest things you need to know, rarity. Certain cards get rereleased in other packs, making them less valuable, more attainable, while this doesn't mean the card is any better or worse off, it also says that there's another card type out there, try to follow me here. At first, the rarest cards were called Secret Rare, that means they have a glittery background, and holo name. Upper Deck removed the Secret Rare type from the booster packs, and then gave us promotional cards with the same look, such as the Master Collection 1 and 2, and the recent promo cards. These cards are LESS rare than their other counterparts, almost assuredly. Also, look in the bottom right hand corner, there's a holo square there on all real YGO cards, silver for unlimited, and gold for 1st edition, which naturally is the more valuable. I have seen some unscrupulous people on another site sell cards that have the bottom edge blurred out so you can't see the tell-tale symbol.
Another bit is the counterfeit cards, those generally have two types, some real poor imitations that can't even be understood as the English is horrible, then there's a bit better type, the card stock is thicker and glossier, probably a matt paper, and will have the YGO logo on the back in a wierd inflated baloon style. Naturally this is a fake, do not support these counterfeits, but if you do happen to have them, your younger children probably won't notice, and it's better than them destroying the valuable originals.
Some cards are released with Shonen Jump, a graphic manga collection bi-monthly released. Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon is one of these, and can usually be found in a local hobby shop for cheaper than sold separately.
Just a few thoughts for you shoppers, keep the game alive and have fun with it Enjoy your purchases!
